The 3 Best Cameras for 2018
As a professional photographer, I have been asked many times “what camera should I buy?” There are so many factors when it comes to what will be the best camera for you but for this list I am assuming that you want a camera that is far beyond the capabilities of your i-phone and offers more control and higher quality images. None of my picks are cheap but they are high quality and will give you great results. These 3 options are for totally different types of photographers: 1. the jetsetter /momtographer, 2. the hobbyist and 3. the professional. All three of my options also happen to be Canon cameras. There are plenty of good brands but Canon and Nikon are kind of the industry standard for professional photographers. I am a canon user so that’s why I am suggesting canons, however there are nikon (and other brand) equivalents of all of these suggestions.
note: if you happen to be in the hobbyist or professional category please note that nice lenses are investment pieces. They are essentially the fur coat that you buy once and wear for 30 years while the camera body is more like the trendy jeans you switch out and update every few years. The reason I say this is because if you have lenses or if you plan on buying lenses, you will want to stay on Brand because lenses are not interchangeable across brands. You can’t take a Nikon lens and use it on a Canon camera body or vice versa. So if you have Nikon lenses you would not want to buy a Canon camera body unless you are ready to buy all new lenses.
THE JETSETTER/ MOM-TOGRAPHER
If you find your self saying “I want a nice camera but I also don’t want to be a pack-mule.” the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III is for you. Its perfect for the photographer on the go who doesn’t want to deal with lugging around a full size camera and a bunch of lenses. This is the camera for the “I can’t carry one more thing” mom or for the world traveler that doesn’t have space to pack a full size camera. Its lightweight and compact, yet it basically has the quality and capabilities of a full size camera. It can function as an automatic point and shoot camera but it also has settings that give you more control in tricky lighting situations. It feature24.2 Megapixel it has the same sensor found in many interchangeable lens cameras. So basically you are getting all of the quality and detail that you would get from a larger camera. It also features a Large touch screen on the back that makes it easy to operate. Because it has a hot shoe, it is compatible with a professional flash, but it also has a built in flash too. A feature that I love it that you can touch the screen to choose the focus point… um can you say revolutionary? That is a game changer and will make your photos look like professional quality. Its lens has a range of 24–72mm which is the same range of my go to professsional lens. It is built sturdy and tough like a professional camera. The last feature that is pretty cool is it has Wireless photo-sharing capabilities through an app. So you could potentially shoot on the camera then wirelessly trasfer to your phone or computer to share immediately. It is a little pricey but if you consider that they basically took a top of the line camera and compacted it down to a point and shoot size it really is worth it. If the price scares you, just know that all of the “PowerShot” G series cameras are AMAZING but this is by far the latest and greatest and its making me swoon just thinking about it! If carrying a full size camera around doesn’t scare you away but you aren’t wanting to shell out thousands of dollars for the top of the line camera, the Canon rebel is the perfect happy medium. The great thing about this camera is that it is compatible with professional style flash as well as high end lenses. It has a great image quality 24.2 megapixels and good range in the ISO. It has built in wifi and blue tooth capabilities so you can instantly share images. This camera is a great option in the “pro-sumer” category (the in-between of a camera for consumers and for professionals). If you are looking to take your photography game to the next level this will give you all the tools you need to shoot fully manual or automatic. This is the classic camera that many photographers have and love. Click HERE to buy this camera!
If you are looking for the top of the line camera with all of the bells and whistles the 5D mark IV is for you. This is the camera that I currently have and to say I am obsessed is an understatement. The quality is incredible: 30.4 megapixels, 4k video, and ISO 100-32000 (expandable to 50-102400). Its auto-focus and metering is exceptional which means you have to do less work. That in turn gives you the freedom to focus more on your creativity. Like the previous cameras on this list it has built in Wifi capabilities for file sharing. While the price tag is steep, this camera is worth the hype especially if you are a professional photographer or aspire to be one. Click HERE to buy this camera!
