If you are like me, you enjoy a good karaoke party. I’ve found that a lot of professional singers dislike this activity because it’s too close to their real life, and there’s a tendency to take it too seriously. But in my opinion, the entire point of karaoke, is NOT to take it too seriously.
People are always asking me to get up sing (even when we’re not doing karaoke) so I have my go to’s locked, loaded and ready to go at all times. But for those of you who get put on the spot or just wanna have fun and not be judged too hard, here are some tips. I narrowed it down to five and I truly think they will make a big difference in your song choice!
1: Choose a Classic or Popular Song. It might sound obvious but seriously sometimes people pick obscure songs that NO ONE knows and it’s just a disaster. Save these tunes for your car or the shower. You’ll get just as much satisfaction and no one will throw food at you.
2: Catchy Chorus. Singing an entire song all by yourself can be intimidating. So picking a song with a super catchy chorus can actually be really helpful. For example, something like “We Will Rock You” by Queen is great because once the chorus comes, everyone usually tends to join in making you only responsible for the verses.
3: Duets. If you have the luxury of a partner around who wants to share the limelight, duets are the way to go. This one I recommend especially for the shy singer. Having someone next you sharing the load is a real confidence booster!
4: Range. This one might be hard to explain but I’m going to try. Sometimes people will choose a song that makes no sense for their voice or vocal range. For example, “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey (another Classic Song) is wonderful. But it can be very hard to sing and properly hit those notes if you’re not a professional singer. Like, even if you ARE a professional singer this one is difficult. So do yourself a favor and stick to a song that’s in your range so you don’t end up forcing people to cringe for you 😉
5: Up Tempo. Finally, if you’re unsure always go with an upbeat choice. The truth is, even if you suck at singing, people will still enjoy themselves if it’s a song they can move to. Another truth is, slow songs or powerful ballads have a tendency to bore in a karaoke setting. Unless you’re really gonna kill it, stick to an up tempo tune.
So there you go, my personal tips. Now go out there and sing your faces off! 🙂
